What is Origin Shield?

About Origin Shield

Having an origin shield is always a good idea to reduce the load on your origin server and maintain high-performance content delivery. Origin shield offers an extra caching layer between the origin server(s) and your CDN edge servers. In the event of a server outage or attacks, the origin shield provides an extra caching layer needed to keep the system going. The shield helps in reducing the load off the origin server and improves the cache hit responses.

How it works

When the origin shield is activated, it reduces the number of calls to your server by assigning a proxy/cache point of presence (PoP) for incoming un-cached requests making it the first line of defense. This way, it shields your origin server(s) from (potentially) thousands (or millions) of incoming individual requests. The origin server is almost untraceable from the outside, receiving only the request from your designated shield PoP, which caches and serves the content itself. This increases your cache-hit efficiency, lets you serve content faster and more efficiently, and keeps your site running smoothly.

To activate Origin Shield, please refer to the following step by step guide here at https://www.psychz.net/client/kb/en/how-to-activate-origin-shield.html

Benefits of origin shield

  1. Extra layer of security
  2. Improved cache efficiency leading to enhanced content delivery performance
  3. Protection for the origin against traffic overloads
  4. High availability and redundancy in your setup
  5. protection against DDoS attacks

Origin shielding is a must-have for performance-critical businesses, such as video streaming and VoD, gaming, e-commerce, and more, because you never want to leave the user experience to chance.
