Hi!

Load balancers are solutions that help in distributing load among a cluster of servers to enhance scalability and high availability. It is of paramount importance to choose a good load balancing solution to attain high performance. There are various load balancing solutions available in the market. Here are some of the most widely used open source load balancing solutions.

Nginx

An open source, high-performance load balancer, Nginx is 80 percent less expensive as compared to hardware load balancers. Nginx provides high scalability almost instantly and you don't need to worry about the hardware scaling. Nginx is independent proprietary hardware and can be deployed on cloud as well as bare metal servers. Nginx can be integrated easily with any type of hardware and you don't need to modify your hardware according to it.

HA Proxy

As the name suggests, HA Proxy(High Availability) provides high availability solutions for numerous websites. It acts as load balancer as well as a proxy server for TCP and HTTP-based applications. HA proxy has become the pick for load balancing solutions of many websites as it is best suited for high traffic environment. HA -Proxy is integrated with various Linux distributions and deployed with cloud platforms as well. It can be integrated very easily with any hardware architecture with little or no modification required.

The latest version of HA-Proxy is version 1.8 which was released on 2nd June 2017 and is in the development stage. The latest stable version of HA-Proxy is 1.7.

Linux Virtual Server

Running on the Linux operating system, the Linux virtual server provides load balancing solutions to a cluster of servers for high availability and easy scalability. The Linux virtual server is an open source load balancer released under the GNU license. It can be used to build high-performance network services such as mail, ftp among others.

The Linux virtual server load balancing techniques ensure that the cluster of server seems as a single server and the user and all the load balancing solutions are taken by it.
