A Content Delivery Network (CDN) works by providing alternative server nodes for users to download resources. CDN (Content Delivery Network) is a network of servers strategically dispersed across the globe (geographically). Since these nodes are spread across the world, it gives a strategic advantage to the user closer to it by providing faster response and download time of content due to reduced latency.

On the other hand, a dedicated server is a piece of hardware (i.e., the server) that can be used to perform computation or tasks that are dedicated solely to you. In other words, none of the space or resources are shared with other customers.

Following are some points that will give you a better understanding of the differences between CDN and Dedicated servers.

Performance

CDN offers better performance compared to a dedicated server in terms of availability. Since a CDN network incorporates multiple nodes or servers to serve your content, even if one of them goes offline or is unavailable will not affect content delivery. Whereas in the case of a dedicated server, all your resources are fetched from the server. For any reason, if it goes down (attack, upgrade, or hardware failure), your application or website will be unavailable to the end-user.

Cost

CDN is likely to cost you much lesser than a dedicated server.

Security

A dedicated server will provide top-level security over any data because everything is stored on a single device. As long as the single server is adequately protected, we don't worry about data leaks. Whereas on a CDN, your data will be stored on multiple server locations. One can't always be sure about the data security at all the server locations.

Let's answer your second question now, which is "How do they work with each other?"

CDN comprises multiple servers, which together form a network where each of the servers communicates with each other from time to time. You can add a CDN service and your dedicated server where your server becomes the origin and all the servers on the CDN network become the edge server that will deliver content to the end-user.

A CDN is nearly always a good idea. In some cases, it might be most effective when used along with a dedicated server. If you have a limited budget and website visitor locations vary greatly, you could consider Psychz Networks CDN service. For more information, please visit  https://www.psychz.net/cdn.html.
