  • Web Hosting vs Dedicated Sever

Can you please tell me the difference between web hosting and dedicated server hosting. Are these two used for the same purpose or different? Can you opt one as an alternative for the other?

The most fundamental difference between web hosting and dedicated server hosting is that one is the subset of another. What it means is that when a dedicated server hosts a website it is a called web hosting. However, websites may not necessarily be hosted on dedicated servers. They can be hosted on a virtual private server(vps), a shared server or a cloud server among others. Similarly, a dedicated server may not be necessarily used to host a website. It can be used as a gaming server, a database server among others. Hence, these two terms do not contradict each other. One cannot be used in place of the other.

Think of it this way. A piece of land can be used to build a house. However, an office or a hotel can also be built on that piece of land. Subsequently, that house can be built on some other area. In this analogy, the piece of land is the dedicated server and the house is the website. Any program that hosts its services on a dedicated server may be referred to as dedicated server hosting. Similarly, a website that is hosted on any platform, whether dedicated, Vps or cloud will be referred to as web hosting.
