NTP is a protocol designed to synchronize the clocks of millions of computers over a network. The objective of NTP is to allow a client to synchronize its clock with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) with a high degree of accuracy and stability. If your computer sets its own clock, it likely uses NTP.

An NTP server is a source of time information, and an NTP client (like you) is a system/device that is attempting to synchronize its clock to a server. The NTP server receives UTC time signals directly from a very accurate source such as an atomic clock or more commonly a GPS signal source. NTP servers listen for client NTP packets on port 123. The NTP server responds to each received client NTP packet in a simple transactional manner by adding fields such as timestamps to the received packet and passing the packet back to the original sende

NTP plays an important for network administrators managing, securing, planning, and debugging a network, as time is often a critical factor in mapping events together.
