  • Colocation vs Managed Hosting vs Cloud

I am beyond confused when it comes to a solution that fits our business.  We currently have 5 dedicated servers that run our public website, backend system, database, reports etc.  I can't seem to figure out if we should go colocation route, managed hosting or move everything to cloud (virtual environment).

If we go colocation, we will save some money but still need the management.

if we go managed hosting, we don't have to worry about hardware but might pay more for management.

As for cloud, not sure if it will be cheaper for us.

When it comes to the matter of control over your infrastructure, there is a good debate between Dedicated Hosting vs Colocation Hosting vs Cloud Hosting. Each one has its own benefits over the other but choosing a particular technology should be very specific to your requirement. So let's understand each term in detail before we decide what is good for you.

With dedicated server hosting you don’t need to own the hardware or the software because the service provider will provide you all. The Managed hosting is self-explanatory and states that the service provider not only provides the server but is also responsible for maintaining the hardware/infrastructure, provides support on software, manages power/backup, internet, and everything else that takes to keep the servers functioning. If you do not have your own technical team to provide the support round the clock to keep your business running, Managed hosting is just the right thing for you. It is highly cost-effective and time-saving too.

In the case of Colocation Hosting, you will have to purchase your own hardware and software, set it up at the colocation center, configure it and maintain it on a regular basis. You can, however, rent/lease space to rack your own servers and only pay for space, power, internet and air conditioning. The method is highly effective but has its own limitations. You need to have a dedicated team of skilled hands at your end to keep an eye on your servers all the time.  It is also very expensive in the initial phase as you will have to buy all the hardware and software as well as pay rent of the infrastructure where you can stack your servers.

With Cloud hosting, you can have access to an unlimited number of machines to effectively act as a single system. It offers unbeatable flexibility by providing an inexhaustible, on-demand supply of infrastructure. If your business demand an immediate increase in your server capability, deploying more servers in minutes is easily possible. However, this capability comes at a price and as per the demand goes up, the price will also go higher.

If you do not have a the experience managing hardware or the resources at your disposal, Managed dedicated Hosting is the best because initial capital expenditure is relatively lower and you can offload infrastructure management to the hosting company while you can focus on your core business.
