  • is cloud cheaper than dedicated server?

Every major provider is focused on cloud and I am wondering if cloud is really cheap when compared to dedicated server?  What happens if one is scaling to 10-20 servers?

Hi!

While comparing the prices between cloud hosting and dedicated hosting the most important parameter that comes to mind is the usage. As most of the cloud hosting providers charge on the basis of usage, it is suitable to compare the two on the price vs usage graph.

While on primary analysis it would seem that the cloud hosting is cheaper, it is not always the case. Some of the popular cloud providers charge you on the basis of every Megabyte of usage and have a tariff for each of their services like storage, processor separately. Hence, if you have not designed a perfect infrastructure or someday your usage exceeds your expectations, you can be in for a real surprise at the end of the billing cycle.

While in the case of dedicated server hosting, once you buy or rent a dedicated server all of its resources can be used by you throughout the month without the surprise of an increased bill. Hence, it is up to you to choose your hosting provider wisely.

Scaling is generally much easier in cloud hosting as the physical server have to be set up in dedicated server hosting. However, if we are talking primarily about pricing I don't think it would make much of a difference.

Please go through the following features to further clear your understanding of the difference between cloud and dedicated server hosting.

Scalability

With a cloud server, you can increase or decrease resources like computing cores, RAM, and storage, as per your requirement. With a cloud, you have unlimited resources at your disposal.

A dedicated server is its own collection of hardware. Hence scaling of resources is a bit difficult and time-consuming task.

Accessibility

To ensure zero downtime, Cloud Servers works on multiple nodes where in the case of a failed node is taken over by a working node ensuring network uptime for your applications.

This is not the case with Dedicated Servers. There is always a risk of downtime hardware failures.

Control

With a cloud server, you have limited control as per the plans provided by your service provider.
A dedicated server offers complete control over the server. You can add applications, programs and performance-enhancing measures to your machine.
