I currently have a shared server and would like to upgrade to a dedicated server. Can you share some key differences between the two?

A dedicated server is always recommended in comparison to Shared server for many reasons. But the primary reason being nature of your business. If your Business is largely depended on your website where you experience a lot of traffic from different part of the world; or if your business involves any application that requires a strong platform (a server), then it is always recommended to go for a Dedicated Server instead of a Shared Server.

Following are some of the factors that will differentiate the two.

Resource usage

Shared Server  Indicates that one physical server and the assigned resources located on that server are shared between several users. To be precise, the amount of disk space and bandwidth you are allotted is limited because there are others sharing the server. You will be charged if you surpass your allotted amount.
This is not the case with a dedicated Server. A dedicated server is preferred because that host is all yours and there is no sharing of resources. Here, the bandwidth and disk space are dedicated to you only so there is no sharing and no limitations on the amount of space provided to you.

Performance

With other sharing the same resources in case of a Shared Server, there can be a lot of traffic which could drain resources such as bandwidth which could lead to slow response time and slow loading time.
With Dedicated Server you can have the entire power at your service. You can customize your server further by using performance improvement tools that can improve your server even further.

Level of Control

Shared server offers you very limited control. This is because many other users using the same physical server and hence it is not viable to allow the user to have complete access to it.
With a Dedicated server, you can have more control over the server with improved flexibility so you can add your preferred programs, applications, and scripts.

Technical Service

With shared server, you need not require many technical skills as maintenance and security are managed by the shared hosting provider. However, the level of service will be limited due to Shared Server being a relatively smaller service.
With Dedicated Server, you can choose from different Tier of management packages depending on your requirement. It is recommended to go for a complete management package as it will reduce a lot of effort from your end to manage the server and service.

Security

With shared Servers, the service provider company will install firewalls and server security applications and programs. However, it cannot guarantee you strong protection because of other users on the same physical server.
A Dedicated server offers you strong security as compared to Shared server. This level of security can be further upgraded from basic to advance with some additional cost. The chances of acquiring viruses, malware and spyware on a Dedicated Server is less because you are the only one on the server.
