Windows Firewall is enabled and runs by default on computers running Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008. You can choose to turn it off for various reasons but it is not recommended as the firewall protects your computer allowing malicious content and from unauthorized users accessing your system via network.

Note: You will have to run the command via admin elevated command prompt if needed

Using following command you can check the status of your windows firewall

C:\WINDOWS\system32> Netsh Advfirewall show allprofiles

Following is the output

Domain Profile Settings:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
State                                 ON
Firewall Policy                       BlockInbound,AllowOutbound
LocalFirewallRules                    N/A (GPO-store only)
LocalConSecRules                      N/A (GPO-store only)
InboundUserNotification               Enable
RemoteManagement                      Disable
UnicastResponseToMulticast            Enable

Logging:
LogAllowedConnections                 Disable
LogDroppedConnections                 Disable
FileName                              %systemroot%\system32\LogFiles\Firewall\pfirewall.log
MaxFileSize                           4096

Private Profile Settings:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
State                                 ON
Firewall Policy                       BlockInbound,AllowOutbound
LocalFirewallRules                    N/A (GPO-store only)
LocalConSecRules                      N/A (GPO-store only)
InboundUserNotification               Enable
RemoteManagement                      Disable
UnicastResponseToMulticast            Enable

Logging:
LogAllowedConnections                 Disable
LogDroppedConnections                 Disable
FileName                              %systemroot%\system32\LogFiles\Firewall\pfirewall.log
MaxFileSize                           4096

Public Profile Settings:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
State                                 ON
Firewall Policy                       BlockInbound,AllowOutbound
LocalFirewallRules                    N/A (GPO-store only)
LocalConSecRules                      N/A (GPO-store only)
InboundUserNotification               Enable
RemoteManagement                      Disable
UnicastResponseToMulticast            Enable

Logging:
LogAllowedConnections                 Disable
LogDroppedConnections                 Disable
FileName                              %systemroot%\system32\LogFiles\Firewall\pfirewall.log
MaxFileSize                           4096

Ok.

To disable the firewall, you can run the following command

C:\WINDOWS\system32> NetSh Advfirewall set allprofiles state off

You will be prompted with "Ok" to confirm that the firewall has been disabled.

To enable the firewall, you can run the following command

C:\WINDOWS\system32> NetSh Advfirewall set allprofiles state on
